Her birthplace was in Downers Grove, Illinois, to a telephone engineer father and a cafe owner mother. Richards spent her childhood with her family in Downers Grove and Mokena alongside her younger sister Michelle. El Camino High School, Downers Grove North High School were her schools. Following her graduation from high school then she was employed as a model. She also traveled across famous cities like Paris, Tokyo, and New York to do photo shoots as well as commercials. Then, she entered acting. Richards has a passion for animals and has been associated with numerous organizations dedicated to the protection of animals. Richards is also committed to her pets and cats who she has had for a considerable amount of time. She is an avid supporter of marriages that are gay and bisexual.
